Adopt a Position Program

In September 1890, the veterans of the 1st Pennsylvania Reserves erected a monument on the Gettysburg Battlefield to honor their war service. The monument is located on the eastern edge of the Wheatfield along Ayres Ave. The monument marks the regiments most advanced position during the battle (July 2nd). Immediately north and south of the monument are markers indicating the positions of the left and right flanks of the regiment.

The 1st Pennsylvania Reserves Company E reenactment group is proud to participate in the Gettysburg National Military Park's "Adopt a Position" program. Facing budgetary constraints, the National Park Service has initiated volunteer programs to help with various duties at the battlefield. The "Adopt A Position" program is one of these efforts. Through this program, groups volunteer to maintain the grounds around one of the monuments on the battlefield. In 1996, the unit adopted the 1st Pennsylvania Reserves position. Since then, the members of the unit have gathered, twice during the year, to "cleanup" the area around the monument.
